Dear Christian Essentials class at Scottsdale Bible Church:
The reasons are entirely personal:
(1) Out of topics: I am coming to the end of my ethics series and I then will run out of topics to teach. If I were to continue teaching, it would require substantially more new preparation than I have done up to this point for the class. I would have to launch out into an entirely new teaching area. (such as teaching through books of the Bible, for example). I just do not think I should do that at this point. (age 65) I now have over 200 lectures on theology and ethics on the class website.
(2) Weariness: I'm just feeling physically and emotionally (perhaps spiritually) weary of preparing to do this teaching. I have been feeling this way for the last couple of months. I just don't have the excitement for the class that I have had up to this point. I understand that to be the Lord's way of guiding me gently to bring my teaching of this class to an end. I started the class in September 2002, so it has been a good run for 11.5 years. But now I think the Lord wants me to focus even more time and attention on writing.
Some members of the class might decide to join another one of the excellent enrichment classes here at Scottsdale Bible Church. But I am also hoping that this Christian Essentials class will continue. I have talked with Steve Eriksson about this, since he oversees adult education at Scottsdale Bible Church. Therefore, if any of you have suggestions as to who could teach the class, could you please let this be known to Steve Eriksson or to Ron Dickison.
It has been a great privilege and joy for me to teach this class now for 11 ½ years, since September 2002. Margaret and I have gotten to know many dozens of you through this class, and over the years our very best friends have been people we got to know in this class. It has been a major part of our lives and a wonderful blessing from God, and we are thankful for it and for all of you. We look forward to continuing as active members of Scottsdale Bible Church for many years to come.
